Board appointments move into the spotlight at public hearings
Mesa County is adding another layer of visibility to how board appointments are made.
At the April 21 public hearing, the Board of County Commissioners moved volunteer appointments out of the consent agenda and into individual consideration. Each appointment is now presented and discussed individually, with an opportunity for public comment.
The change builds on an already transparent process by making it easier to see who is being appointed, what the role is and why it matters.
The intent is to make the process easier to follow. Under this approach, department directors present each appointment and explain the role of the board or commission.
Commissioners noted this change helps highlight boards that often operate behind the scenes and encourages more residents to get involved.
The first appointment under the updated process was Michael Ritter, appointed as an alternate to the Mesa County Planning Commission for a term ending Dec. 31, 2028.
Changing how items appear on the agenda gives residents a clearer view of the decisions that shape the community and opens the door to greater awareness and community participation.
